Abstract
A series of ground anchors of varying lengths were installed in a medium dense sand, with a veiw to study as many as possible of the variables influencing anchor behaviour and load transfer. The anchor tie-bars, bulbs and the surrounding sand were instrumented using strain gauges, load cells and marker bands. Critical anchor loads as defined by the French National Code of Practice increased linearly with anchor bulb length. A model for load transfer from the bulb to the ground is proposed.
