Membrane Penetration in Triaxial Tests

Abstract

The possibility of predicting volume changes due to membrane penetration in sands of different grain sizes is explored. It is shown that these changes are influenced by grain size, effective containing pressure, density index, and geometry of sample. The effect of membrane penetration can be minimized by adopting large diameter test samples and with other parameters remaining constant.
