Field Measurements of an Earth Support System

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 107, Issue 12

Abstract

Two case studies of lateral earth support system are presented. This system uses the insitu earth reinforcement technique, which is different from the conventional systems that serve to retain soils behind a vertical cut, to strengthen the native soil. The field results were compared with predictions obtained from a finite element method of analysis. In general, the predictions agree well with the field measurement demonstrating that the analytical procedures developed can correctly predict the field behavior. Furthermore, it has shown that ground movements adjacent to an open excavation can be determined and controlled if a properly designed system is installed. Hence, the insitu earth reinforcement lateral support system has shown to offer a viable alternative for providing lateral support in deep excavation.
