Seepage From Free Water Above Impermeable Tailings

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 107, Issue 11

Abstract

A proposed model for seepage discharge into a porous embankment from free water above impermeable tailings is described. It is assumed that the discharge is controlled by saturated seepage in an entry zone adjacent to the free water interface. The isotropic entry zone has been analysed by complex variable methods and a general solution obtained for seepage discharge quantities. Application of the solution to anisotropic embankments is described. The significance of the theoretical results for design is discussed and a simple formula proposed for estimating the discharge.
