Abstract
Assuming linear stress distribution, the normal effective stress is determined at the bottom of vertical interslice boundaries along slip circles through an earth slope. A Mohr's circle of stress is constructed for each point, and the slope of the critical shear planes and the factor of safety on these planes are determined. These values are compared, respectively, with the slope of the slip circle and the factor of safety against failure on the slip surface. The correlation between the values is found to be poor for arbitrarily chosen slip circles but good for critical circles, except at the upper end where the soil is in tension.
