Model Study of Load Transfer in Slender Pile

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 106, Issue 8

Abstract

This note describes an experimental study in which the phenomena influencing the development of patterns of skin friction in a very long, slender pile driven progressively deeper into two compacted clays were investigated. The study was accomplished through model tests in which the range of the pile-soil relative stiffness was representative of the range for many prototype friction piles. The state of effective stress along the piles was not simulated due to the restricted size of the model and lack of an apparatus to apply appropriate depthwise variable confining pressures.
