Stress Transmission in Granular Media

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 105, Issue 9

Abstract

It is well known from several experiments that the concentration factors could be considerably greater than indicated by Boussinesq's formula. Different causes have been sought to explain this (1,2) however, no specific information is available in published form regarding the physical characteristics of materials that influence the concentration of stresses in the medium other than elastic solids.
