Ballistic Pendulums and Dynamic Testing of Clays
Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 105, Issue 8
Abstract
Ballistic pendulums provide simple and effective means of testing clays at constant rate of strain. Tests were performed at strain rates of 1,400%/sec and 2,300%/sec. Increasing stiffness of stress-strain response reported for lower strain rates (up to 0.17%/sec was found to occur for higher strain rates as well as for the horizontally oriented samples. The advantage of ballistic pendulums is further indicated by the fact that through this method of testing soils material anisotropy is detectable. The ratio of strengths in horizontal and vertical directions was found to be a function of consolidation stress.
