Yield Acceleration for Seismic Stability of Slopes
Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 105, Issue 5
Abstract
This note a method of estimating the yield acceleration based on a logarithmic spiral failure mechanism is examined. The yield acceleration may be defined as the threshold average acceleration acting upon a sliding mass above which permanent deformations occur. It corresponds to a factor of safety with respect to sliding of unity. For analysis purposes the static strength parameters may be assumed, or if shaking causes a degradation of the material properties, due allowance may be made. Some recognition may be taken of the fact that the soil system is not rigid, in that the theory of damped elastic vibrations is employed to give a more realistic estimate of the earthquake acceleration field.
