Abstract
Design charts are presented for the purpose of selecting values of length and spacing of horizontal drains to achieve specific improvements of slope stability. Seepage model tests were used to determine ground-water pressures in slopes containing systems of horizontal drains having various lengths and spacings. Stability calculations evaluated the stabilizing influences of the drainage systems. The design charts define the relationships between drain length, drain spacing, and increase of safety factor of a slope. The design charts are for homogeneous soils and are independent of the permeability of the soil.
