Abstract
The lower threshold of cyclic stress or strain that can be sustained in a soil without a tendency for permanent volume change is an important criterion in many foundation problems. However, in the wealth of available literature on cyclic loading, there has been rather limited comment on permanent dilatation at low amplitudes of loading.
