Abstract
The design and field behavior of the first reinforced earth wall in the United States are presented. Equations for designing the reinforcement and the skin plate were developed. It was concluded that the use of active earth pressure for calculating the stresses in the reinforcement is applicable to the front end portion of the reinforcement and its connection. For the middle portion of the reinforcement, the at rest earth pressure should be used in the design. The stresses in the skin plate can be analyzed by assuming a hinged-end condition and based on vertical deformation. The vertical deformation of the skin plate is proportional to the overburden pressure.
