Time-Dependent Development of Strength in Dredgings

Abstract
To maintain the more than 1,000 harbors and 20,000 miles (32,000 km) of navigable waterways in support of United States waterborne commerce, over 300,000,000 cu yd (230,000,000 m3) of bottom sediment are dredged annually at a cost in excess of $150,000,000 (2), and, for reasons of economics or environmental concern, or both, these materials are frequently deposited in diked containment areas to form landfills.
