Abstract
Structural-soil composite bridge systems utilizing corrugated steel culvert lines have recently become quite popular. In a previous page on long-span flexible elliptical culverts, one of the configurations studied was a shallow tunnel with the soil surface subjected to a concentrated load simulating the overhead passage of heavy equipment at an early stage of construction. However, as this analysis was carried out using planar experimental and numerical models, only a surface line loading was considered; it was, of course, impossible to take into account the attenuation of the concentrated load effect along the longitudinal axis of the tunnel. To obtain this information, a simple three-dimensional photoelastic model test was devised that would yield data which is compatible with the previously reported unlined elliptical tunnel under line loading.
