Consolidation of Fibrous Peat

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 101, Issue 8

Abstract

A series of single increment vertical consolidation tests have been conducted on undisturbed samples of fibrous peat in the 10-in. (250-mm) diam Rowe cell. The results have been assessed in the light of a recently developed theory by Berry and Poskitt. Close agreement is obtained between the observed and predicted rates of settlement and pore pressure dissipation. The decrease in vertical permeability during a consolidation process is of the order of 10³. As a result, the coefficient of vertical consolidation decreases markedly during a consolidation increment.
