The Slides in the San Fernando Dams During the Earthquake of February 9, 1971

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 101, Issue 7

Abstract

One of the major effects of the San Fernando earthquake of February 9, 1971 was a major slide in the upstream slope of the Lower San Fernando Dam. This embankment dam, about 140ft (43 m) high at its maximum section, provided a reservoir capacity of about 20,000 acre-ft (25,000,000 m3) and at the time of the earthquake the water level in the reservoir was about 35 ft (11 m) below the crest.
