Abstract
In soil dynamics literature, two kinds of model equations have been used to express the propagation and the damping properties of waves. The purpose of this technical note is to compare the propagation and damping characteristics of waves as predicted by both model equations. An equation is proposed which is based on the theory of interacting continua different from Biot's and which by suitable limits yields both equations. Results of the comparisons are given.
