Temperature Effect on Shear Wave Velocities in Clays
Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 100, Issue 12
Abstract
A series of constant temperature low-amplitude resonant column tests were performed to determine the effect of specimen temperature on the shear wave velocity of seven cohesive soils. Samples of each soil were tested at temperatures of 22 and 4°C. During the tests, the samples were subjected to constant confining pressure and constant temperature. Drainage was permitted during the entire test interval. The results showed that short-time changes in temperature affect the shear wave velocity, but these effects are temporary if drainage is permitted. The long-time tests show that while the shear wave velocity does increase with time, the increase can be divided into two portions analogous to primary and secondary consolidation.
