Tjipanundjang Dam in West Java, Indonesia
Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 100, Issue 5
Abstract
It is shown that this homogeneous earth dam is built from clay consisting of varying proportions of halloysite and allophane. The clay has a remarkably high shear strength despite high water content and clay fraction. The variation in mineralogical composition influences the behavior of the soil when air or oven dried but has no significant influence on the shear strength, compressibility, and permeability of the soil. The excellent engineering properties of the soil are attributed to the nature of the individual particles rather than to the existence of cemented clusters as previously suggested by Terzaghi.
