Abstract

Oroville Dam, a 770-ft-high, earth-fill dam with an 80,000,000 cu yd embankment, was extensively instrumented during construction. The instrumentation includes piezometers, fluid settlement devices, crossarm devices, soil-pressure cells, accelerometers, and extensometers in the embankment, and deformation meters, soil-pressure cells, and foundation/concrete-stress cells in concrete structures. Some of the instrumentation is designed to record events during an earthquake. Instrument descriptions, installation methods, and performance results including representative graphical data summaries are given, together with current (1973) operational status of the embedded instruments.
