Seismic Response of RC Moment Frame Including Topography–Soil–Structure Interaction

Publication: Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction
Volume 26, Issue 4

Abstract

The reflections of waves collide with the slope, and the reduction in the ground lateral stiffness in the areas near the slope crest affects buildings. In this research, using the three-dimensional simulation, the seismic response of midrise reinforced concrete buildings located in the vicinity of slopes was investigated. The nonlinear soil behavior was simulated using an isotropic hardening elastoplastic hysteretic constitutive model, i.e., the hardening soil model with small-strain stiffness (HSS). The inelastic behavior for building components was considered using elastoplastic hinges. Results were presented as a ratio of topography–soil–structure interaction (TSSI) responses to soil–structure interaction (SSI) responses. The results showed that the topography of the slope increases the natural period range in the vicinity of the slope compared with cases without slopes. The maximum lateral displacement of the building and its maximum base shear force were 40% and 12% higher, respectively, in the TSSI mode than in the SSI mode.
