Editor’s Note

Publication: Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice
Volume 136, Issue 2
I have a few announcements for this issue.

Best Paper Award 2009

I would like to announce the Best Paper Award winner from our four 2009 issues. The Best Paper Award goes to Daniel R. Lynch and Jeffrey S. Russell for their paper “Experiential Learning in Engineering Practice” found in volume 135, number 1, published in January 2009. Other nominations were: “New Look at the Code of Ethics” by Francis E. Griggs, Jr.; and “Beyond the Cognitive: The Affective Domain, Values, and the Achievement of the Vision” by Daniel R. Lynch, Jeffrey S. Russell, Jeffrey C. Evans, and Kevin G. Sutterer, also from the same issue. Clearly that issue was a keeper. I encourage you to dig out your issue and reread these fine papers. The quality of our journal depends on the quality of author submissions, and manuscripts of this caliber provide a valuable service to the profession.

Passing the Torch

In 2009 we said farewell to our corresponding editors Lisa O’Donnell, P. Aarne Vesilind, and Tommy S. W. Wong. All three have rendered great service to the Journal. We welcome aboard new corresponding editors Brock E. Barry, P.E., Ph.D., an assistant professor at the United States Military Academy; Matthew W. Roberts, P.E., Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin—Platteville; and Debra Larson, Ph.D., P.E., associate dean of the College of Engineering, Forestry, and Natural Sciences at Northern Arizona University. The associate and corresponding editors are the gatekeepers for the quality of the Journal, and their work is very important.

In Memoriam

We also note the passing of Dr. E. Walter (Walt) LeFevre, Dist.M.ASCE, on November 23, 2009. Walt was a strong advocate in ASCE and elsewhere for engineering education and professional issues, and particularly engineering ethics—all central topics of this journal. An extensive obituary was published in ASCE News, but the Journal’s editorial board wanted to make a special note of Walt’s contributions.
