Condition Monitoring Framework Based on the Cause of Mosque Physical Defects in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya

Publication: Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities
Volume 30, Issue 5

Abstract

This study has been performed to build a condition-monitoring framework of mosque physical conditions based on the cause of the defects in question. The study sample is four mosques in Malaysia: two in Kuala Lumpur and two in Putrajaya. A total of 2,276 defects were recorded. Test results of one-way analysis of variances (ANOVA) at p=0.000 (p<0.05) shows a difference of significant difference of defect causes on the level of mosque physical conditions. The biggest difference stems from the usage factor with remedial/construction, while the smallest is from usage with environment, with mean difference values of 0.625 and 0.510, respectively. This means the level of mosque physical conditions is influenced primarily by usage factor, followed by environment and remedial/construction. Usage factors consist of impact damage/vandalism, change of use, and normal wear; environment includes artificial movement/vibration, natural movement/vibration, and aging; and remedial/construction includes material selection and workmanship. This condition-monitoring framework can prevent or minimize each mosque’s physical defects. Therefore, users can conduct worship, educational, social, administrative, and economic activities that are safe, healthy, and comfortable in order to increase the mosque’s service to religion, communities, and the nation at large.
