The ASCE Draft Environmental Site Remediation Manual
Publication: Practice Periodical of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste Management
Volume 1, Issue 3
Abstract
ASCE is preparing a guidance manual for the design of remedial actions at sites contaminated with hazardous wastes. This article is a brief summary of the processes described in the manual. Site characterization is a review of site history and development of data on contaminant type, concentration, and distribution. The risks to human health and ecosystems are assessed. The project team screens and analyzes various remediation alternatives to determine which is most appropriate. A design and cost estimate for the chosen alternative is prepared, with plans for health and safety, community relations, and other details needed for remediation implementation. In many cases, expedited procedures can speed the process and reduce costs by avoiding delays and bypassing steps not required for the specific site.
