Deep‐Draft Navigation Project Design
Publication: Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering

Abstract
Navigation channel design for large ships has evolved from a rule‐of‐thumb approach to comprehensive site specific analysis which include navigation requirements, environmental assessment and economic optimization. The design of navigation channels and harbors requires an understanding of the problem, assembly and evaluation of all pertinent facts, and development of a rational plan. The design engineer should be responsible for developing the rational design and sufficient alternative plans so the economic optimum plan is evident and the recommended plan is substantiated. The elements of this modern design analysis are presented with the design philosophy which will result in a safe, efficient, least cost project with due consideration of environmental and social impacts.
