Axial Compression Capacity of Welded-Slip Pipeline Joints
Publication: Journal of Transportation Engineering
Volume 133, Issue 5
Abstract
Using advanced numerical tools, which account for the cold-expansion manufacturing process, the axial capacity of welded slip pipeline joints under compressive loading is investigated. The numerical results are in good agreement with available experimental data, and show the effects of several geometric parameters. Internal pressure effects are also examined, and an assessment of previously reported simplified design equations is conducted.

Acknowledgments
The present work has been motivated by the participation of the senior writer in the ASCE Buried Flexible (Steel) Pipe Load Stability Criteria and Design Committee. Permission to show the photos of the two specimens was granted by Dr. I. Tutuncu, Halcrow HPA, New York. The writers would also like to thank Professor T. D. O’Rourke, Cornell University, for providing the experimental data, and Dr. D. K. Williams, Sharoden Engineering Consultants, Matthews, N.C., for his useful comments.
