Dynamic Testing of Full-Scale Concrete and Clay Tile Roof Models

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 124, Issue 5

Abstract

In order to investigate the seismic performance and to provide experimental evidence for developing guidelines for seismic design of concrete and clay tile roofs for typical low-rise residential or commercial buildings, 24 full-scale tile roof models have been tested under simulated earthquake loading using shaking tables. The roof models were constructed following the installation requirements of the 1994 Uniform Building Code. Experimental parameters include tile type, roof slope, input direction of horizontal vibration, and peak input acceleration at the roof level. Test results indicate that tile roofs can sustain horizontal accelerations much higher than 0.8g, which is considered the design level acceleration for tile roofs of ordinary buildings in high seismic regions. Ultimate performance criteria for tile roofs have been identified based on the test results.
