Flow Rule in Elastically Restrained One‐Way Spanning RC Slabs

Abstract
The applicability of either incremental or total strain plastic potential flow rules to yielding reinforced concrete sections under combined flexure and membrane action has recently been clarified. The correct flow rule applicable depends upon the direction of motion along the yield criterion, which is demonstrated using the special case of a rigid‐plastic strip element with gaps at its abutments. This paper presents the equations for the elastic‐plastic modeling of slab behavior under both flow rules and compares the formulation of previous researchers. The elastic‐plastic model is used to show the applicability of flow‐rule choice to the general case, the circumstances at transfer from one flow rule to the other, and the importance of making the correct choice.
