Bin‐Wall Failure Caused by Eccentric Discharge of Free‐Flowing Grain
Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering

Abstract
The method of eccentric or side discharge is sometimes used by the grain storage industry, but the loads generated by this unloading technique are not yet fully understood by designers. Because of this lack of full understanding, many grain bins unloaded using this method have failed. Several methods of predicting the pressures generated by the eccentric discharge of grain are reviewed and compared to the observed behavior of a test bin as it was loaded to failure. Failure by yielding of wall material and failure by elastic buckling of the bin wall are both found to be possible. The use of the pressures predicted using methods suggested by the American Concrete Institute and the Farm Building Information Centre result in reasonable estimates of the required bin wall thickness, but no existing theory can be used with full confidence. Until the development of a theory that accurately describes the behavior of eccentrically unloaded grain bins, this method of unloading grain bins should be avoided if at all possible.
