Fatigue of Eight‐Year Weathered A588 Steel Stiffeners in Salt Water

Abstract

Bare, exposed, weathering steel structures have lower fatigue strength than painted steel structures. This finding is based on the results of 36 tests in which transverse stiffener specimens are weathered for eight years and then stresscycled in air or in 3% salt water. The results are compared with those from 1,565 previous fatigue tests of specimens weathered up to eight years and than stresscycled in air. Reductions in allowable stress range are recommended for bare, exposed, weathering steel for bridges in environments of medium corrosivity.
