Natural Frequencies and Modes of Inclined Cables

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 112, Issue 1

Abstract

Asymptotic equations are derived for the natural frequencies and mode shapes of an elastic, taut, inclined cable. The equations are derived from more general asymptotic results by assuming quasi‐static stretching. It is shown that for horizontal cables all previous results are recovered, while inclined cables have additional properties which cannot be obtained by using horizontal cable results. The phenomena of avoided crossings and hybrid mode formation are reviewed for inclined cables, in particular because of the significant dynamic tension amplification they induce.
