Partial Moment Redistribution in Cold‐Formed Steel

Abstract

Post‐yielding strength of redundant cold‐formed steel flexural members, due to moment redistribution, is presented. The reserve strength due to section plastification is discussed in an accompanying paper. In an earlier paper, the development of the failure criteria was presented, and limit analysis and design procedures, similar to those developed for reinforced concrete members, were proposed. It is shown that the use of the proposed limit design procedure results in considerable savings, due to both stress and moment redistribution. As cold‐formed steel structural sections, in the form of floor and wall panels, roof decks, and framing members are increasingly used in building construction, the inclusion of inelastic reserve strength may become an economic necessity. Additionally, the availability of reliable methods to predict behavior beyond the initiation of yielding would help provide realistic safety factors against complete failure.
