Cyclic Behavior and Design of Link Beams

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 109, Issue 10

Abstract

The results of an experimental investigation of the inelastic behavior of short wide‐flange steel beams commonly used in eccentrically braced frames is presented. The test specimens were subjected to a severe cyclic loading program, causing their webs to buckle inelastically. Alternative stiffening arrangements were employed in an effort to extend the capabilities of these elements. An evaluation of the performance of the specimens is made, with emphasis on their energy dissipation capacity, and recommendations are made regarding their design.
