Desilting Basin System of the Dul Hasti Hydroelectric Project

Abstract
The Dul Hasti Hydroelectric Project located in the lower ranges of the Himalayas on a river carrying heavy sediment loads, especially during the high-flow season (monsoon period), includes a small storage capacity (live and dead storages). Because of these particular features it is an utmost necessity to trap a high percentage of the coarser particles generally made of quartz. To achieve this objective and trap more than 90% of the particles coarser than 0.3 mm, underground desilting basins have been designed on the basis of a theoretical approach further checked and developed using hydraulic model tests. The latter showed that with a design discharge of 123 m 3 /s a 240-m-long basin equipped with a 48-m diffusor and having a cross-sectional area of 170 m 2 can satisfactorily meet the requirement.
