Point‐Rainfall Measurement in Terms of Time Interval
Publication: Journal of Hydraulic Engineering
Volume 117, Issue 10
Abstract
An alternative approach to recording and analyzing point rainfall is proposed. This alternative measure makes use of simple modifications of an autographic rain gage and a dedicated controller to monitor pulses generated by the rain gage when a selected amount of rainfall is collected. The times of occurrence of successive pulses are recorded. This approach reduces the amount of data storage tremendously, yet preserves all the information with fine temporal resolution. The resultant rainfall series, when expressed in terms of frequency against log10 (time interval) between successfive pulses, are fitted with a two-parameter gamma distribution function. The function, when replotted as cumulative density function, provides a simple means to simulate synthetic rainfall series for applications where serial correlation of events is not important.
