Abstract
The probabilistic approach to the evaluation of transport of coarse material on a horizontal bottom, which can be applied to the design of a cover layer of a pipeline, is described. By assuming that the water velocity at the bottom is Gaussian distributed, with a narrow spectrum, the probability of the bottom shear stress is derived. With a combination of the probability function of the bottom shear and a simple sediment transport formula, the expected transport rate is calculated. The results give a warning that conventional design methods have a risk of understanding the amount of covering material lost.
