Seawater Circulation in Sewage Outfall Tunnels
Publication: Journal of Hydraulic Engineering
Volume 111, Issue 5
Abstract
The mechanisms of seawater circulation in tunnelled ocean sewage outfalls are investigated. The magnitude of the circulation is determined in terms of the sewage flow and geometric parameters of the outfall. An expression is derived for the sewage flow required to arrest the circulation. The theory is well supported by laboratory experiments. Means by which the risk of seawater intrusion may be minimized are discussed.
