Experimental Foundation Impedance Functions

Abstract

Complex foundation impedance functions were determined experimentally from the results of forced vibration tests conducted at an accelerograph station. Two independent vibration experiments were performed to obtain estimates of the translational, K11, and rocking, K22, impedance functions and the impedance functions, K12 and K21, representing the cross-coupling between translational and rocking motions. Values of K11 and K22 computed from the test data were not appreciably affected by K12 and 21. This result suggests that, for similar foundations and excitation frequencies, the usual practice of conducting one experiment to obtain estimates of K11 and K22, under the assumption that K12 = K21 = O, is valid.
