Estimating Septic Tank Pumping Frequency

Abstract
Septic tanks are used in rural areas to settle solids from wastewater, provide for some anaerobic digestion, and store the undigested solids. The accumulated solids must be pumped out periodically. The frequency of septic tank pumping can be estimated for any given tank and household size by estimating the per capita volume and solids loading rates, the trapping efficiency, percent solids digested, percent solids in sludge, and the liquid detention time. Estimated septic tank pumping frequencies are calculated by using average values reported in the literature.
