Adapting to Risk from Climate Change

Publication: GeoStrata Magazine Archive
Volume 26, Issue 3

Abstract

Increased concentrations of greenhouse gases, primarily from the burning of fossil fuels, means more thermal energy is retained by the atmosphere, which, in turn, increases the severity of weather conditions and the frequency of extreme weather events. As a result, our predictions of ambient temperatures, wind loads, hydrologic conditions, and their effects on the performance of civil infrastructure, are now more uncertain than ever before.
