A Bridge for all Centuries

Publication: Civil Engineering Magazine Archive
Volume 75, Issue 8

Abstract

An extremely long—and record setting—main span was designed for the second bridge to cross the Panama Canal in order to meet the owner’s requirement that no piers be placed in the water. Because no disruption of canal traffic was permitted at any time, the cable-stayed bridge of cast-in-place concrete was carefully constructed using the balanced-cantilever method.
