Abstract
In the selection of materials for aerospace applications, consideration is given to factors, such as strength and weight, as well as to economics and energy requirements for both manufacture and in-service operation of the completed structure. The proper combination of all factors must be considered before new applications can be undertaken. Aerospace structural materials cover a wide range of both metal alloys and nonmetallics. Because coverage of all materials is not feasible, for the civil engineer who is probably not familiar with many of these materials, three major metal alloying systems—steel, aluminum, and titanium—are examined. Heat treatments, fabrication, product forms and applications are reviewed to give the reader a broad introduction to some materials that could satisfactorily meet future structural requirements.
