Optimum Location of Maintenance Facilities
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 106, Issue 6
Abstract
A linear programming model has been developed to assign roadway maintenance projects to district maintenance facilities on the basis of minimum cost. The model utilizes a relationship that defines maintenance cost as a function of facility-to-project travel time. Optimum assignments for the entire Alabama highway network were obtained by applying the model to nine geographic regions of the state. The model was also used to calculate the savings associated with closing certain maintenance facilities and reassigning their projects to adjacent facilities. Four facilities identified by the model were closed by the State of Alabama Highway Department for a projected net annual savings of –243,245.
