The Central Artery Project—Construction Techniques
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 106, Issue 2
Abstract
Traffic demand is nearly double the design capacity on the Central Artery in Boston, Mass. The Artery is the most important highway link in the metropolitan area, being located in the city's central business district. Efforts to improve the roadway have led to consideration of full-scale reconstruction of the facility. This new facility would be a tunnel located within the same highway corridor. The paper outlines three construction procedures that appear feasible whereby the tunnel(s) can be constructed while the existing elevated highway remains in service.
