Aerodynamics in Air Pollution Modeling

Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 106, Issue 2

Abstract

The mechanism of pollutant transport and dispersion processes in the atmosphere is described with emphasis on aerodynamic effects due to the presence of structures, urban complex, and significant topographic features. Various treatments of the aerodynamic effects in air pollution modeling are presented. The basic structure of the analytic calculation schemes is examined from the standpoint of practical applications. In view of the complex nature of flow disturbance and pollutant dispersion over structures and terrain obstacles and the general uniqueness of each specific situation, both the reliability of the data base and the suitability of a particular air pollution model must be evaluated. Validation and calibration of models against field measurement are strongly recommended.
