Limited Sight Distance Effect on Speed
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 105, Issue 5
Abstract
Sight distance is a basic element of geometric design having a direct bearing on the quality and cost of the designed road. An evaluation is made of speed characteristics as influenced by sight distance at six test sites, each a two-lane rural road. Measures were developed to express the average of driver responses along sections with limited sight distances, and exponential models were constructed to link the measured vertical sight distance to the appropriate response data. Based on the proposed models, an attempt is made to determine the desired sight distance for a design of vertical curves on two-lane roads.
