Proposed Load Evaluation System for U.S. Air Force

Abstract
The University of New Mexico Civil Engineering Research Facility (CERF) has developed a means of evaluating the load-carrying characteristics of airfield pavements. The system is based on a nondestructive wave propagation technique and is presently being utilized by the USAF in their airfield evaluation program in conjunction with conventional CBR analyses. The technique involves the steady-state vibration of a pavement section and measurement of wave propagation characteristics for each material layer. Elastic moduli computed from propagation velocities are input to a nonlinear finite element computer code capable of calculating the stresses, strains, and deflections induced in the pavement by single-wheel or multiple-wheel landing gear configurations of any aircraft in the code library. Strains for each layer are then compared with failure criteria, which results in an estimate of the predicted pavement life.
