Abstract
The design and construction of phase one field work, completed in 1970, is examined. Techniques using sand drains and flooding to dissipate swelling potential, lime treatment capillary barrier to prevent desiccation, and a bituminous membrane to waterproof the roadway to prevent swelling are presented. To date, the experimental sections constructed with these techniques are performing very well in providing smooth riding surface and no movement. On the other hand, the control sections have experienced severe distress and have been repaired several times. The second phase field work is to be started in 1974. The techniques that will be used in this experimental work come from the findings of phase one work. Special emphasis will be placed on having practical and economical designs. The four experimental sections that will be constructed during this phase will depend on the utilization of remolded clay and bituminous membrane to waterproof the roadway.
