Abstract

The basis of the fracture mechanics approach to the strength of materials and applications of this approach to civil engineering materials are summarized and it is shown that there generally appears to be a relationship between effective fracture surface energy and strain at failure for asphaltic and cemented materials. Some applications of the fracture mechanics approach to problems involving the tensile failure of pavement materials are suggested. Suggested theories appear to give reasonable predictions when applied to practical situations.
