Abstract
Decision making that is based on deterministic principles neglects the random nature of various phenomena occurring at traffic intersections, and this could result in intersection design which may be insufficient or obsolete. Proximal decision analysis will be used to analyze the effect of uncertainty of traffic volume in a light signal optimization problem. In this method, a deterministic analysis is first performed then the effects of uncertainty evaluated later. The delayed time is the criteria used to optimize the decisions involved in the intersection problem where there is uncertainty obtained deterministically. An adjustment of the green phase period to compensate for the effects of uncertainty is then assessed by proximal decision analysis. Proximal decision analysis appears to be a suitable method for traffic intersection problems. Its practicality is derived from its simplicity since it requires only knowledge of the mean and variance of the uncertain variables.
